L’incontro del 4 aprile si svolgerà in U1-10 e Giovanni Coletti ci presenterà: Geological and historical floods reconstruction at Magra River Estuary (Eastern Liguria)”
Here the abstract of the talk:
While it is common knowledge that the damage toll of extreme climatic events has been steadily rising, we have much less information for understanding whether or not this is related to an increase of frequency and violence of these events driven by anthropogenic climate change. Meteorological rain-fall series in particular are too short to provide a comprehensive view of multidecadal patterns in climate. The study of the sedimentary record of river deltas might represent the suitable setting to bridge the short-time scale information provided by rain-fall series with the long-time scale information provided by the sediments. The analysis of sedimentary cores collected in front of the estuary of Magra river presents valuable data to test the suitability of this approach.
The paper by Brunetti et al. (2019) is suggested as a reading for the meeting. This paper shows that there is no conclusive evidence for the increase of extreme precipitations and it is the starting point for the research that will be presented. Two other papers are provided in the e-learning page: Pichard et al. (2017), which shows a similar analysis in another region, and Bini et al. (2009), that describes the geological evolution in the area of interest.
A friendly reminder will be sent in the next days.
Looking forward to meeting you all,
the CJC team
