Effects of subduction termination on the continental lithosphere – A geophysical extravaganza on northern Borneo (Simone Pilia)

The next meeting of the Climate Journal Club will be held on Monday 7th March in room U1-10 at 11:30Simone Pilia will talk about "Effects of subduction termination on the continental lithosphere – A geophysical extravaganza on northern Borneo"

Here the abstract of the talk:

What happens when subduction stops? A prime example where the effects of subduction termination can be studied is northern Borneo (Malaysia), where subduction ceased in the late Miocene and was followed by a puzzling tectonic response. I will present the results of the nBOSS passive-seismic experiment, used to illuminate the crust and upper mantle beneath northern Borneo. Results from the seismic analysis, coupled with structural geology information, have been integrated to constrain a new thermo-mechanical simulation that approximate the dynamic evolution of the post-subduction setting in northern Borneo.

Everyone is invited to read the paper by Pilia et al. (2021), provided in the e-learning page, that will be the basis for the discussion.

The link to the e-learning page with all the info, the Webex link and the suggested paper is provided here:  https://elearning.unimib.it/course/view.php?id=35058#section-1

A friendly reminder will be sent in the next days.
Looking forward to meeting you all,

the CJC team
