World Oceans Day

Monday 08 June 2026 Monday 08 June 2026

In the World Oceans Day, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DISAT) at the University of Milano-Bicocca celebrates the richness and vitality of its scientific community, which is deeply committed to the study of oceans and marine environments.

The department is home to a large community of researchers, professors, and young scholars who tackle some of the main challenges related to the sea and ocean ecosystems through interdisciplinary approaches. Research activities range from marine biology to geology, and from chemistry to marine physics, integrating diverse expertise to understand how oceans function, how they evolve, and their role in the Earth's climate system.

The research conducted at DISAT addresses crucial themes for the present and future of our planet: marine biodiversity, climate change, pollution, oceanographic dynamics, natural resources, as well as the protection and sustainable management of coastal and deep-sea ecosystems. Through oceanographic campaigns, environmental monitoring, laboratory activities, and international collaborations, the department's scientific community contributes daily to the advancement of knowledge and the protection of the marine environment.

World Oceans Day therefore represents a special opportunity to highlight this collective commitment and to reaffirm the importance of scientific research in understanding and protecting the oceans, which are essential for life on our planet.

Today, June 8th, at 5:30 PM, an event dedicated to marine and oceanographic research will be held at the PAVILION Fuorimano - BiM (Viale Piero e Alberto Pirelli 10, Milan), where Enrico Montalbetti and Elena Valsecchi will present some of the research activities developed at DISAT and at the MaRHE Center—the university's research and higher education center dedicated to tropical marine ecosystems.

With this anniversary, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences renews its commitment to promoting research, education, and awareness on marine issues, strengthening the dialogue between science, society, and environmental sustainability.
