Next meeting wll be held on Monday 30th May in room U1-04 at 11:30. Pietro Bazzicalupo will talk about "From H1 to HRCC: a brief overview of the climate of the last 20000 years of the Mediterranean Sea"
Here the abstract of the talk:
The last 20000 years were a crucial part of our earth climate history: they saw the end of the glacial age and the beginning of the Holocene, during which our civilizations arose.
The Mediterranean Sea is a perfect repository of climate proxies that are used to open a window over this portion of the past, both on a large and small scale. The integration of proxies from land and sea allows for a detailed reconstruction of the main climatic trend and the various millennial-to-centennial scale oscillations. In this presentation, I will do a brief introduction on paleoclimatic studies on the Mediterranean Sea and we will talk about the most important climate events of the past 20000 years from the Heinrich event 1 (H1) to the Holocene Rapid Climate Changes (HRCC), investigating how the proxies have reacted to these events and how Mediterranean civilizations have coped with the most recent of those oscillations.
Everyone is invited to read the papers by Bazzicalupo et al. (2020) and Margaritelli et al. (2020) ,provided in the e-learning page, that will be the basis for the discussion.
